Ads Erode Trust

Why advertising in AI assistants is fundamentally different from search engine ads.

ChatGPT’s trustworthiness took a hit when introducing ads in January 2026.

Advertising in AI assistants is fundamentally different from advertising in search engines. When you search for “running shoes,” your intent is clear and ads can match it. But in a conversation with an AI assistant, you share context you would never put into a search query, such as health concerns, financial worries, or career doubts. U.S. Senator Ed Markey warned in an open letter to seven major AI companies that ads in chatbots pose unique manipulation risks: chatbots build human-like relationships with users, and advertising can be woven invisibly into the conversational flow, making it virtually impossible to distinguish genuine advice from sponsored content.

Both Anthropic and Google have taken the stance against ads. Anthropic published a clear commitment that Claude will remain ad-free. Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis stated at Davos that Gemini has no plans for ads, reasoning that a truly helpful personal assistant must give recommendations that are unbiased and unadulterated.
